Teaching Clinicians to Prepare for the Worst

Johns Hopkins Gynecology
January 13, 2015

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recently turned to Johns Hopkins clinical obstetricians to develop simulation scenarios for treating critically ill pregnant women. The training scenarios were simulated and videotaped at Johns Hopkins in August 2014 and will be available on the SMFM website.

“We took an in-depth view of 18 different topics,” says Andrew Satin, Johns Hopkins’ director of gynecology and obstetrics, “to provide instruction in cases such as cardiopulmonary arrest in term pregnancies, acute pulmonary embolisms, amniotic fluid embolisms, acute cardiovascular collapse and thyroid storms. These events are rare at many hospitals, but they do occur regularly at tertiary care hospitals that see large numbers of high-risk patients.”
