Research Overview: S2BI Tool for Substance Abuse Among Adolescents and Young Adults

Renata Arrington Sanders, director of pediatric and adolescent services at the Johns Hopkins Center for Transgender and Gender Expansive Health, and Yu-Hsiang Hsieh, associate professor of emergency medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, discuss their presentation during the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine 2023 annual meeting about screening tools and questionnaires for adolescent and young adult patients who use substances. The rates of substance use are high in the 18–24 age group. Annually, an estimated 600,000 patients are seen in adult emergency settings for substance use and substance use disorder. The objective of this study was to determine how screening tools and screening questionnaires are used in the emergency room.
