Olivi, a director of the Johns Hopkins brain tumor division and meningioma service, was born in Padova, Italy. He received his M.D. from the University of Padova Medical School in 1979 and completed an elective clerkship and clinical rotation in neurosurgery at the University of California at San Diego. Olivi completed a residency at the University of Padova, then moved to Cincinnati where he held residencies at the Good Samaritan Hospital, the Christ Hospital, the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. In 1988, he came to The Johns Hopkins Hospital as a clinical and research fellow in neuro-oncology and neurosurgery before being appointed assistant professor in 1991.  

At Hopkins, Olivi served as director of the division of neurosurgical oncology, vice director of the department of neurosurgery, medical director of the Neurosurgery Critical Care Unit, and head of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s department of neurosurgery. In 2015, Olivi was appointed professor and director of neurosurgery at Catholic University of Rome and chair of the Neurosurgery Institute at the Agostino Gemelli Hospital.

Olivi has published over 130 articles and twenty book chapters. He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. His awards include the Clinician Scientist Award in 1992, and the Richard Otenasek, Jr. Faculty Teaching Award in 1996, both from The Johns Hopkins University.
