Neuro-otologist Wade Chien shares a recap of findings related to sudden sensorineural hearing loss related to COVID-19 infection and vaccination, which he presented at the 2022 AAO-HNSF meeting.
Ever since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccinations. There have been several case reports of patients who develop sudden hearing loss after either contracting the viral infection itself or receiving the COVID-19 vaccinations. And therefore um Dr. Daniel son and Dr. Eric for my sister and myself wanted to see if we can look at this question more closely. We decided to use the data from the vaccine adverse events reporting system or bears. Um to examine this question. The Beyers database was set up by the C. D. C. To track any adverse events that occurs after after Vaccinations. And using the data from the database, we found that the incidence of sudden hearing loss after receiving the COVID-19 vaccination was similar to the incidents of sudden hearing loss prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Um during the presentation of the Academy meeting I also reviewed several other studies that have looked at this very important question. And most of these studies show that the incidents of sudden hearing loss after COVID-19 vaccination is similar to the incidents of sudden hearing loss prior to the covid 19 pandemic. So in conclusion we felt that there was uh no significant increase in the incidence of sudden hearing loss uh in patients who received covid 19 vaccinations
