Myopia is a common cause of correctable vision loss. The number of people affected by myopia is increasing around the world, and its prevalence is projected to reach 50% of the world population by 2050. This rise is attributed mostly to lifestyle factors. Myopia affects an estimated 34% of children in the United States and a significantly higher percentage in some countries in Asia. Even low degrees of myopia can be associated with an increased risk of retinal detachment, cataracts and glaucoma. This symposium will present the impact of myopia on the global population and discuss its potential treatments.
